CD-ROM editions:All future large publications of Stonerose Publishing Company will first issued on CD-ROM at about ½ the price of corresponding paper editions. The CD editions will include full-color photographs and supplemental materials not in the paper editions. In the case of the Guidebook, you will be able to print out the pages you need to take on vacation instead of hauling the entire Guidebook with you, and the thousands of web pages cited will be hyperlinked, so that you can consult them immediately for updated information on hours of operation, etc. The Glossary will be fully searchable with hyperlinked cross references, and of course, full color photos. To produce these in full-color paper editions would be cost prohibitive, but black and white paper editions will be available if there is a demand. If you request to be put on a waiting list, please specify your preference for CD-ROM or paper editions.
A Manual of Small Museum Design and Operation, 2nd Edition: The Manual concentrates on topics relevant to small mining museums. It is intended primarily for museums with volunteer or otherwise non-professionally trained staffs, but even professional museum curators will find a wealth of ideas for improvements and community outreach. General topics include the basics of museum and exhibit design, museum operation, and generating community involvement. Some more specific topics include: choosing a name, the use of trademarks, setting admissions fees, setting the operating schedule, designing road signs and other signage, advertizing, financing, building design, security, parking, visitable mines, outdoor sites, mining theme parks, community activities, restaurants, souvenir shops, the use of artifacts and media (e.g., photos, films), museum publications, and hardware and equipment. The implementation of many of these topics, such as building construction and exhibit design will normally require the services of professionals, but the Manual provides the overview necessary for working with such professionalsin many cases by simply describing the options available.
The basics of the exhibit design, cataloging, and preservation are covered in acknowledgment of the fact that many small museums cannot afford professional services. These aspects of the Manual are not intended for professionals in the design, archiving, and preservation fields.
The 2nd Edition of the Manual will probably be priced at about $15 in paper, or $6 on CD-ROM. The Manual 2nd Edition will be made available when the waiting list contains at least 100 names. To be placed on the waiting list for priority notification of availability of the Manual 2nd Edition, contactStonerose.
A Glossary of Mining: As envisioned at this time, the Glossary will probably run about 500 pages of relatively small print. Unlike the $100-plus USBM and similar dictionaries, the Glossary, will be affordable by anyone interested in the mineral industries. The definitions will be understandable by individuals without multiple PhDs, and it will also include historical terms missing from the existing dictionaries. Finally, it will be richly illustrated with probably > 1000 photos and diagrams. The Glossary will probably include short biographies of mining personalities and histories of mining companies.
The Glossary may be available in late 2005. It will probably sell for $30 in paper, $15 on CD-ROM. To be placed on the waiting list for priority notification of availability of the Glossary, contactStonerose.
A Guidebook to Mining in America, 2nd Edition: will probably be available in late 2008. It will probably sell for $50 ($25 per volume) in paper, or $15 (both volumes) on one CD-ROM.
Note to resellers: If a second edition is released within a year of your wholesale purchase date, the old edition will be returnable for a full refund, or exchange for copies of the new edition. See the details under General Returns on the Ordering Information page.
